Returns are calculated using the Time Weighted Return shown below
The Time Weighted Return uses the following formula to calculate the investment performance:
The TWR eliminates the timing effect that external portfolio cash flows have on returns. When calculating TWR, daily portfolio valuations are needed whenever there is external cash flow, such as a deposit or a withdrawal.
Parameters
CV = Closing Valuation
OV = Opening Valuation
NCF = Net cash flow received at the period end
Assumptions
- Net Cash Flows are deemed to occur at the end of the period.
- Calculation of the return is done on a daily basis.
- The daily return values are then compounded over the period selected.
Fund, investment and member expenses are excluded from the calculation.
The benefits of the time weighted return calculation are:
-
it enables the performance of the portfolio to be captured, independent of the flow of money into and out of the portfolio
-
it enables the investment portfolio to be compared against industry benchmarks
