Welcome to September edition of the Class FAQs.
Div 296 Cost Base Adjustment
This provides guidance on how to assess, record, and process Div 296 cost base adjustments in Class. The election must be made by the due date of the FY2027 tax return. Once executed by the trustees, the decision is irrevocable.
- Reports: You can run the Div 296 Cost Base Adjustment Analysis Report to review the estimated capital gain or loss position as at 30 June 2026. You can also generate the Div 296 Cost Base Adjustment Minute/Resolution to formally document the trustees' decision.
- Record Div 296 cost base adjustment decision: navigate to Fund Level > Periodic Processing > Div 296 cost base adjust
- Process Div 296 cost base adjustment: review the calculated capital gain/loss for holdings and parcels, then manually entering a capital gain/loss for a Custom Holding accounts by selecting Edit. This part is optional as this number is not carried forward. It is only used to populate the overall capital gain/loss position. Click Submit to process the Div 296 cost base adjustment
- If you encounter any errors during the process, please refer to this guide here for further information and troubleshooting assistance.
Electronically Lodge the Annual Return for a Wind Up Fund
The ATO only releases the final SMSF Annual Return stationery around June every year. The ATO allows wind up funds to electronically lodge the Annual Return and associated schedules earlier, using previous Financial Year stationary.
The capital and tax losses for the wind-up year (current Financial Year) are not displayed because the report is using the previous financial year’s template (as the current FY template is not yet available from the ATO).
Where necessary, you may need to manually update the carried forward capital and tax losses in the tax return.
For example, for the FY 2027 wound up SMSF, the FY 2026 ATO stationary has been used. In the Losses schedule, enter FY 2027's carried forward tax loss at Part A-1 in Label B which shows as "Tax losses carried forward - 2025-26". Enter FY 2027's carried forward net capital loss at Part A-2 in Label H which shows as "Net capital losses carried forward - 2025-26".
For FY2027 lodgements ensure that the fund will not have any 'in scope' member for Div 296 (Total Super Balance > $3m). If there is an 'in scope' member you cannot lodge the wind up fund early as there is no mechanism to report Div 296 earnings.
Data Feeds - Setup Guides & Statuses
Setup Guides
Class provides a large number of automated data feeds from a range of providers. You can find out whether there is an available feed by access our Data Feeds - Overview page. From here you can find important information for each Data Feed regarding what data is included in the Feed and you can also quickly access the individual Help Guide page for each data feed.
Given the increase in digital signatures, any Feed that will accept electronically signed documents will be noted in the individual Feed Help Guide. This will include details of which e-signature platforms are accepted along with the additional information required to be included such as the audit trail for the e-signed documents. An example can be found here with Macquarie Cash.
Data Feed Status
From time to time, Data Feeds may stop due to a number of different reasons. If the data feed has stopped or you notice issues with the data, you can check the status at any time by visiting our Data Feed Status page.
You can search this page by using Ctrl + F and typing the name of the Feed or simply scroll through the page. Only Feeds experiencing a known issue will be shown here.
My Feed hasn't started - what do I do?
Most data feeds take up to 10 business days to be activated by the provider and we request that you wait this amount of time prior to following up with Class Support.
If it has been more than 10 days you can do the following:
- Ensure you have followed the correct setup process per the individual Help Guide article for the relevant Feed. Some feeds require additional steps after you have uploaded the signed Authority or selected the relevant Adviser.
- Check the Feed Status on in the Feed Console. If the provider has rejected the Feed, they may provide the reason here. You can see a list of Data Feed Provider Responses here.
- Once you have done the above you can request a Data Feed Follow Up by following the steps in this Help Guide article - How to log a feed follow-up request directly from Class
