Welcome to October edition of the Class FAQs.
Managing TBAR
As you may be aware, SMSFs are required to lodge Transfer Balance Account Report (TBAR) events within 28 days after the end of the relevant quarter. With the next TBAR reporting deadline approaching, now is a great time to review your fund's reporting obligations and ensure each member's Transfer Balance Account is accurately maintained using the Class TBAR Console.
If you'd like a refresher on TBAR reporting in Class, the following resources may assist:
- TBAR FAQs - A collection of frequently asked questions covering common TBAR scenarios and reporting requirements.
- TBAR Amendments - Guidance on how to amend previously lodged TBAR events that were generated and reported through Class.
- Generate and Lodge a TBAR File - Learn how to generate TBAR files for reportable events, download the CSV file for lodgement through the Tax Agent Portal, and use the Mark as Lodged function in Class to record the ATO receipt number for future reference.
- Manual TBAR Events - Record TBAR events that were lodged outside of Class or make adjustments to a member's Transfer Balance Account to align with ATO records.
- TBAR Console - The TBAR Console provides visibility over each member's Transfer Balance Account, helping you monitor balances, reportable events, and cap utilisation at the fund level. For information on Transfer Balance Cap indexation, refer to the relevant guidance available within the article.
- TBAR Declaration Report - Generate a TBAR Declaration for trustees to authorise their registered tax agent to lodge TBAR events electronically with the ATO on the fund's behalf.
- Navigating the TBAR Console - A comprehensive guide to the features and functionality available within the TBAR Console, including monitoring and managing members' transfer balance positions.
These resources are designed to help you confidently manage TBAR reporting obligations and maintain accurate transfer balance records within Class.
Tax Statement Processing
-
Error when processing Annual Tax Statement is “Annual Tax Statement cannot be processed as the Net Distribution Amount is not equal to the sum of the Related Cash Distributions".
This commonly occurs where a tax statement containing AMIT Cost Base Net Amount adjustments has already been processed and a Period Update has subsequently been completed.
To resolve the error:
- Roll back the current Period Update (if applicable).
- Navigate to Investments > Tax Statement Console.
- Select the relevant tax statement and click Edit.
- Click Reset.
-
Reprocess the Annual Tax Statement.
Resetting the tax statement refreshes the underlying calculations and allows the Net Distribution Amount to be recalculated against the related cash distributions.
-
Unable to Save TFN Tax Withheld Amounts
This issue can occur when a TFN Tax Withheld amount has been included in the tax statement but was not previously recorded in the related Distribution Event. To ensure the TFN withholding amount flows correctly into the tax statement:- Open the relevant Distribution Event.
- Enter the TFN Tax Withheld amount.
- Save the Distribution Event.
-
Return to the Tax Statement and enter the same TFN withholding amount.
Recording the TFN Tax Withheld amount in the Distribution Event first ensures it can be successfully saved and reported within the tax statement.
-
Negative Amount Validation Error
The following error may be displayed when processing a tax statement: "All money fields except the Tax Exempted and AMIT Cost Base Net Amounts must be greater than or equal to zero."This error occurs when a negative value has been entered into a field that does not support negative amounts.
To resolve this issue, review the tax statement and ensure that all monetary fields contain values greater than or equal to zero. The only exceptions are the Tax Exempted and AMIT Cost Base Net Amount fields, which can accept both positive and negative values.
If the tax statement includes expenses, refer to the How to Enter a Tax Statement with Expenses help article for guidance on the correct processing method.
